PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP)

Our blood is made up of 93% red blood cells, 6% white blood cells, 1% platelets and plasma. Platelets are best known for their function of blood-clotting to stop bleeding. Platelets, however, are much more significant than this, as human platelets are also a critical component in injury healing.

Platelet-rich plasma, commonly referred to as PRP, is an autologous blood derivative- it is human blood that is spun down and separated, producing a concentration of platelets above normal values. Platelets are the clotting cells of our blood, but they also have great potential in enhancing healing of muscle, tendon and ligaments. Studies suggest that growth factors released by platelets recruit reparative cells, augmenting tissue repair and accelerating soft tissue healing.

Who is a good candidate for hair PRP?

PRP is a great solution for both men and women, especially when hair transplant surgery is not an option. PRP injections can stimulate new hair growth in people who suffer from male or female pattern baldness (also known as androgenetic alopecia). The male hair procedure is sometimes referred to as “PRP Vampire Hair Raising”.

Medications used to restore hair can be used in conjunction with PRP, only if the patient can tolerate the medication used. PRP can also be combined with Minoxidil lotion or used after a hair transplantation for an even better effect.

PRP can also be used in combination with hair transplantation. Studies have shown that PRP, when injected post hair transplantation, can enhance hair density, graft uptake, hair thickness and quality of hair growth.

Benefits of PRP for hair loss

Non-surgical with minimal downtime

No incisions or anaesthesia, with most patients able to return to normal activities soon after treatment.

Uses your own blood

Because PRP is made from your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is reduced.

Natural-looking results

PRP supports the growth of your own hair, helping results blend naturally with your existing hair.

More accessible option

PRP may be a more cost-effective alternative for patients who are not ready for surgical hair restoration.

What does PRP for hair involve?

How should I prepare for my PRP treatment?

  • Drink plenty of water and eat healthily prior to the treatment.

  • For best results, we also recommend red light therapy before your Hair PRP injections, as it may help stimulate the scalp and prepare the hair follicles for treatment.

  • For even greater results, take advantage of the hyperbaric chamber facility available at Malvern PRP Clinic.

  • Vitamin E and fish-oil tablets should be avoided 2–3 days prior to your treatment, as they can increase bruising*.

  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications, as they can also increase bruising.

Please let us know if you are taking any of the above.
